Let Me Introduce Barbara

Introducing Barbara...

This is a desk that was unearth from the bunkhouse project. She's from the 1940s and was given to my client by a family member. She has eight drawers with original hardware, the drawer on the lower right can be modified to hold file folders. I named her Barbara because it was the third most popular name of the 1940s according to the Social Security Administration website... I figured it was fitting.

This is how she started out. She was very stressed.. I'm mean distressed, but not in a good way.

She got a good sanding and her body received a few coats of Meadow by Valspar. The top was refinished with Minwax PolyShades in Antique Walnut Satin. All requested by my client. Here are a few highlights before she goes to her new home.

I love the rope trim. It goes all the way around the top.

Thanks for visiting... till next time.

I've Been Benched

A couple of weeks ago I showed this very sad bench in one of my bunkhouse posts. She is a recovery from the plethora of stuff in the bunkhouse.

Well, when I brought her into the house for a redressing I discovered that she had... Oh I don't know... ONE MILLION upholstery nails in her, very similar to these.

And of course there was an second layer of fabric with its own set of ONE MILLION nails. So that means, I painstaking removed TWO MILLION individual nails. Well, to be honest it probably just felt like two million, however it was a lot. Good times people, good times!

After that smooth sailing, right? WRONG! What I thought was a great sanding, turned out to be a fallacy. Why do I say that? Take a look below. Notice anything horribly wrong after the first coat of primer?

Let's try this again. Coat number two.

We went on like that for another few coats of primer. Finally I decided to just put the paint on and pray there would be no bleed through. HALLELUJAH! It worked. And here she is with her new drop cloth top on and deciding what type of skirt to wear.

She decided on a pleated skirt instead of ruffled and a two tailored bows to spice it up a little. (The color is Meadow by Valspar in Eggshell.)

The bow is totally no sew. My good friend was a great helper with them:

Mr. Uncluttered has taken her over already for the mudroom. The previous bench we had in there was too big. Oh well, I guess that means he likes her too.

Till next time.

Bunkhouse Vanity Bench

Here is a simple redo of bench recovered from "the bunkhouse". Cute little vanity bench with a great set of legs on her! But she looked like she'd had way too much fun in the sun.

So it was time to breakout the spray paint and go to work. First, some rust preventing primer.

Then, Oil Rubbed Bronze by Krylon and a clear satin top coat.

I've had this curtain panel hanging around that I can't find the mate for (Probably got lost in all the moves because for the life of me I can't imagine leaving one panel up at the window and moving out. But crazier things have happened.) so now it will be a seat cover.

Here she is all ready for bath time.

Thanks for visiting. She and a quite a few other items from "the bunkhouse" will be up on Etsy soon.
