Target Is And Will Always Be My Friend

Just dropping in really quick today to share some finds from Target this weekend. On Saturday, I went to Target to pick up some... hmm... what did I go for? Oh, I was looking for some goodies for my planner. Eh, let's be honest, it's Target, I went because its my happy place. At any rate, I went with the intention of only spending a few dollars. I guess that's always my plan but when I go into Target there's no way I can leave without taking a detour through the household items. Do you take the same detour?

I've been casually looking for some bar stools since moving into our little condo. Originally I'd been eyeing the Ingolf Bar Stool from Ikea for $69. I see it all over blogland and Pinterest, certainly a cute chair and seems to hold up well... but enter my friend Target.


There I was in the bar stool aisle, minding my own business with my $20 worth of dollar spot and planner items in my cart, when light shined from the heavens and I spotted the clearance tag on these Threshold bar stools. They have a similar feel to the ones at Ikea, but were now marked down to half the price! Oh yeah, the last three of these babies were definitely coming home with me.

And about an hour after arriving home we have this...

Ah... much better! But this picture makes me realize we need some color in this space. Any suggestions?

Frugal Find Of The Century... I Mean Weekend

Hey there! How's the weekend treating ya? Saturday, when I arrived at a client's house I realized her next door neighbor was having a garage sale... hello! Of course, I had to walk over to check it out. I mean, isn't there some law against passing up a garage sale without paying visit? I swear I heard they just passed it... at least here in Cali! Well, I'm so glad I didn't break the law, on this day at least, because I walked away with a stinkin' awesome find!

Here's how the conversation went after I had already bought my $3.00 find, which I'll show on a later post, a was about to walk away...

   Me: How much is the jug?

   Homeowner: Oh, I don't know. I haven't thought about. Granny, what do you think?

   Granny: Hmm... good question.

   Homeowner: Umm, I guess $5.00

   Me: WHAT!!! $5.00!!! 

   Homeowner: I guess $5.00 is a good price.

   Me: (Clearing throat and regaining my nonchalantness) It's a great price. (Smile) I'll take it. (Now picture me skipping as I carry my jug away)

I was completely not looking for a jug, but at $5.00 I would be crazy to have passed it up. Would you pass this jug up for $5.00? 

A five gallon crock jug! Now do you see the reason for the reason for the temporary loss of composure?

Do you realize how expensive these jugs are in an antique store? No? Well, try $100 or more! Which is probably why I was not looking for one.

Weekend Thrifty Finds

I don't know if I can express in words the magnitude of excitement that I have over my weekend finds. I have been on the lookout for a vintage fan that reasonable. I did see one last week in a consignment shop for $200. I looked online and I saw they ranged from $45 - $350 plus shipping. All of those were sooooo out of my price range.

This fan is on eBay for $119.99.

But then on Friday I paid a visit to one of my favorite antique stores and there sitting in the corner on the floor was a gorgeous vintage electric fan. I approached cautiously, expecting to be disappointed by the price tag, to investigate further. I saw the heavens open up and heard angels rejoicing as I turned over the tag and saw $29!!!! What?! SOLD!!! But then because I'm cheap I talked myself out of it and Mr. Uncluttered had to talk me back into it. (I do love that man!) But wait there is more... as I was checking out the owner said that I could have it for $25 if I paid cash. You better believe I went to the bank and got cash!

Does it look familiar? It's the exact same fan as the one listed on eBay, but I saved $94.99.  

One more find for the weekend that was a good find for $4. Its Ridgway Staffordshire Windsor gravy boat.

Family of Owls Makeover

I've gotten a few requests to see the family of owls with their final makeovers from my spray paint mishap post. It took a day or two to finish them. You'll never believe how many times I had to use my little steel wool tip to fix my many goof ups. But at last they are done. I haven't found a permanent place for them yet, but its just a matter of time.

Before I show them to you, I have to tell you why I decided to keep them. Here on the ranch we have an owl box that actually has a family of screeching owls (not a technical term even though it should be). Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but of course they make the huge maple tree in our front yard they perch at night. Also not a problem except for the fact that each and every single time they take flight they screech at the very top of their lungs. They have lungs like opera singers.

Sooooooooo every night of my life here on the ranch I fall asleep to the dreadful pleasant songs of these dear owls. Therefore I figured I would bring these very silent owls home hoping they would teach the others how to master the art of being quiet. I"ll let you know how it works out for me, but to be honest I'm not holding my breath. ;)

Now, that you have the back story here is the transformation. Before, cute but ordinary.

Sometime the road to transformation can be a rough one.

After is always worth the effort, at least that's what I've been told.

I really like this photo. Each of the owls appear to be different shades of khaki, which is the color I used.

How To Fix A Spray Paint Smudge

Yesterday I showed a darling family of owls and mentioned that I was going to spray paint them.

Well, that's exactly what I was doing until one of them almost fell and I had to grab it. NOOOO, say it ain't so! I just stood there in shock, not knowing what to do. I have never had to fix a spray paint smudge. Have you?

Logic was telling me to sand it. But with what? 220 grit... that will surely leave deeper scratches. Hold on, but what a minute... what about steel wool?

I waited until the coat of spray paint had dried and then pulled a piece of steel wool off. (Do you see the paint on my hands from me breaking the fall?)

Next, I lightly buffed the imperfection until it was smooth to the touch.

Then it was time to respray. Still wet, but looks like it might work. (BTW this is primer)

Hallelujah... it worked. Now I can add the final coat.

Thrifty Finds Over the Weekend

I just had to share some the goods that I scored over the weekend. I feel super fortunate since I didn't have to pay for any of them. :) A few of these will be going into an Etsy shop that I'm setting up... so excited about that.

These were covered in spiders when I found them. Yuck!

Now, if you're a collector you may have noticed two items in the first picture that stand out. When I was given them they were covered in dust and cobwebs but I still knew what they were.

As you can see the frog has been badly repaired. Does anyone know about re-repairing this? I think I'll be adding this to my personal collection, since the value has been diminished... bummer.

Lastly, we have the family of owls. I was going to pass, but I think they would be darling spray painted all one color. I'll show you as soon as they're done.
