Unclutter It Thursday #5... Getting Prepared To Unclutter

Hello Ladies and welcome to the first Unclutter It Thursday of 2012. I'm not working on a particular project this week, I wanted to share how I prepare for most organizing projects.

Have you ever looked at a room that's in complete shambles and thought, "Where do I begin?" Yeah, me too! Well, this is how I approach getting over the hurdle of where to begin.

  1. Mind Set: Personally, I start by getting into the right frame of mind. Tackling a decluttering project can be exasperating at times. So it's important to be mentally prepared for the task at hand. Don't overwhelm yourself by biting off more than you can chew. Know that you do not have to organize the entire house or even an entire room in one day. Tackling one cabinet can give you such a sense of accomplishment.
  2. Prepare To Purge: Often times, something that's hard to come to terms with is the fact that items will need to be purged. Clutter normally comes from having more items than you have the ability to store. So be prepared to let go of things.
  3. Get Help: If you can enlist the help of family or friends the task will move a lot faster. Besides misery loves company... kidding of course... well, maybe not. :)
  4. Select A Room: It's important to focus your efforts on one room. Nothing will get done if you're running back and forth moving items from one room to the next. Trust me I've done it before. LOL. Its quite draining. Once you have selected the room, narrow it done even further to a certain area in the room... closet, cabinet, junk drawer, etc.
  5. Gather Tools: This can vary widely dependent upon the room you're tackling. But normally you can't go wrong with plastic bins and a large garbage bag or two. Make sure at a minimum you have a Keep, Donate, and Trash bin.
  6. Set A Time Limit: If devoting a day to organizing is more than you can handle, don't feel bad. Devote whatever time you have, whether its 15 mins or 4 hours. Set a timer and when it goes off you will have accomplished something to be proud of no matter how much time has gone by.
  7. Inspiration Music:  There is nothing like an upbeat  tempo to get the organizing juices flowing. So set the mood with music and boogie down as you purge. I'm telling you, once I put on some of my jams, I get in the zone!
  8. Ready, Set, Go: Now go get 'er done!
There you go folks. That's how I start each uncluttering project I tackle. For the next few weeks I'll be showing projects from our kitchen and built-in hutch in the dining room. So stay tuned, first up is the pantry. Take a look at these organized spaces... sure to inspire whatever project is next on your list.

To be honest with you my pantry will look nothing like any other the images above. My pantry is half the size of the one below, but its nice to dream.

But that doesn't mean down the road I couldn't do something like this. Just to die for.

That's all for now. Till next time... happy blogging.
